Hello everyone!

Happy Wednesday!

Day 12: Gion Festival, Fushimi Inari

On the 12th day of our Japan Trip, we went to Gion Festival and Fushimi Inari!

Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival) is one of the biggest events that I’ve always wanted to see (it lasts 1 month!). Luckily, when we stayed in Kyoto it was exactly the month of the event! We left our hotel a bit earlier not to miss it. By the time we arrived, however, all the good spots had been already taken by amateur photographers and tourists so it was really hard to find ours.

As soon as we finally got our spot, one section of the parade passed in front of us. Watching men bringing the huge Hoko (the floats), my Spanish family seemed to be very interested. We stayed there for like two hours since 9:30 am. Although you can enjoy just watching the parade, it would’ve been even more interesting if I had done some research around meanings of each Hoko etc, to be honest...

The parade was still coming, but as the time was running out, we moved on. Around 20 minutes by train from the centre, the next destination was Fushimi Inari Shrine. After a street full of local shops, there’s a shrine in vivid red. Walking up to the back, you will see the famous Torii (Red gates). As expected, the place was full of tourists like in Arashiyama (bamboo forest)… After passing the Torii, you can enjoy a walk along trail routes that are perfect for hiking.

As we walked a long way in the heat, we got exhausted and went back to the city centre. On our way back we stopped by a Japanese style pasta restaurant just before Pontocho and filled our stomach. It was my Spanish family’s first time to try such type of pasta, but they liked it a lot :)

Wondering where we went next?

Find it out!
